Depending on your financial status and health, you may be entitled to some support from the Social Security department.In this section we give a brief overview of the main benefits available in Jersey to help you understand what each one is and assist you in identifying any that may be appropriate to you. 

Actively Seeking Work (ASW)

When you apply for Income Support you will be told about your jobseeker expectations and your Actively Seeking Work (ASW) status.  Most people who receive Income Support are expected to engage with Back to Work or JET on a regular basis to apply for and secure work.  As part of JET’s agreement with Social Security, we report attendance and job seeking activity on a weekly basis for our ASW clients.  For more information about your ASW status, you can refer to your Job Seeker’s Agreement provided by Income Support or contact them directly.  JET’s Client Agreement sets out our expectations for engagement, which you can view here.

If you are an ASW and in receipt of Income Support you are expected to ask permission from Customer and Local Services before going off-island for any reason.  It is your responsibility to do this before booking any travel but if you require support with this, please speak to your Employment Coordinator. 

Income Support

Income Support is an income-related benefit for Jersey residents that provides financial support.  You can apply for Income Support if you:

• are on a low household income
• pass the Income Support residence test
• are working, looking for work or exempt from looking for work

STIA

STIA stands for Short Term Incapacity Allowance, a benefit which may be paid to you if you can’t work due to illness or injury.  In order to submit a request for STIA, a doctor must confirm that you’re unable to work and issue you with a medical certificate.  You must not work when claiming this benefit.

LTIA

Long Term Incapacity Allowance (LTIA) is a Social Security contributory benefit which helps if you have long-term ill-health or an injury.

You could get between £12.35 and £246.89 per week and, depending on your award, some Social Security contribution credits. Or you may not be awarded anything at all.

Your level of benefit depends on your illness or injury. It is not based on whether you can work or if you are earning less because of your illness or injury. 

To determine your eligibility for this benefit, you may be required to attend a Medical Board assessment with a doctor at Customer & Local Services.

Medical Component

If you have a long-term illness or disability that has lasted, or will last, for at least six months, or you are terminally ill, you may be able to get extra payments as part of your Income Support claim.

These payments are known as impairment or health payments. Depending on the nature and severity of your condition, you can qualify for them if you:

• need to visit your GP on a regular basis
• need assistance with personal care, e.g. washing / dressing
• have a condition that seriously affects your ability to get around outdoors
• need a formal package of care to help you with normal living activities
